Intelligent learning - Essay Example I likewise caused them to accept that raising assets isn't generally hard the same number of my friends thought. I caused them to comprehend that there are a great deal of approaches to raise supports we simply must be innovative and apply a little exertion to raise it. I present the possibility of a carport deal with a gathering. The things that will be on special will be the things that our neighbors are prepared to arrange. To make the story short, we had the option to surpass our target to raise support for our undertaking while at the same time having a ton of fun simultaneously. The other experience I had about driving a gathering was during a school venture where I was appointed as a task head. I was reluctant from the outset since I was restless that I may wind up doing the entire venture myself if my colleagues won't work and collaborate. It was not as hard as I suspected in the event that one will simply realize how to push â€Å"the right button† or inspire the gath ering individuals to work. Before these ventures were understood, the procedure and elements of completing it was very extreme. It was a transaction of authority, hierarchical ability, cooperation and settling individual issue among the individuals in the gathering. Be that as it may, the principle part is authority on the best way to guide the vitality of the group to submit and understand our target (Kayser and Melcher 2007). It was difficult soliciting individuals from my age to do certain things that it made me contemplate it and in the process took in a few things about myself. I discovered that in getting individuals resolve to do certain things, I need to coexist with them very well particularly in the event that it is a humanitarian effort simply like our locale venture or a school work where one can't immediate others since everyone is in equivalent balance (we are for the most part understudies). I discovered that I do quite well in this office that it is practically easy on my part. Yet, I need to concede that there are things about me that is un-pioneer like that I need to change, for example, my propensity to tarry. I saw that when I linger, my colleagues likewise did likewise. There are likewise sure things about my conduct that I didn't understand to be an authority attribute. Realizing that my colleagues in our locale venture are not being paid to do it, I summoned their higher feeling of accomplishing and contributing great when I revealed to them that what we are doing is for the network and that we will end up being a constant piece of it since we buckled down for an undertaking devoted to our locale. This is really an attribute of transformational administration (Judge and Piccolo 2004). My great relational ability likewise empowered me to viably address an issue with our gathering. The individual I relegated to go entryway to entryway in one of our boulevards unexpectedly didn't appear. I was stressed. In any case, rather than condemning a t him to be apathetic and cautious, I asked what occurred. I discovered that my colleague had a health related crisis at home in light of the fact that a sister must be hurried to the medical clinic. At the point when the issue was done, my colleague was propelled to go entryway to entryway to gather things for our carport deal and this would not have been conceivable had I passed judgment on him before. On zones that I have to improve my conduct about authority, I trust it would be my hierarchical and regulatory aptitudes. I need to concede that I am complicated as a pioneer. I understood this during the carport deal itself since I had difficult time setting up the occasion. The occasion could have been exceptional with more participants and more assets could have been raised on the off chance that I had a superior

Henceforth his melodic dissent plays out method of communicating an efficient antagonistic vibe against a prevailing society and social issues, or war time England (Chin, 2007). Careful investigations on individuals, culture and society uncovers different significant realities about culture and its effect on individuals. Scientists have regularly recognized it as the selective image of human presence which impacts the framework and frequently prompts alteration. Much the same as human culture, music which is a portrayal of human, mind and soul, or the voice of human spirit supports an extremely Popular culture or Pop that is a mass inclination which is not quite the same as the more established individuals however has developed as a language of the new age and even assist them with interfacing sincerely through the verses of the melody. Some Perks Of Life At The Other Cambridge

Some Perks Of Life At The Other Cambridge [by Mirat Shah 08] My name is Mirat and I am a junior studying Course 3 (Materials Science and Engineering). I grew up in New Jersey and spent the past two years in Cambridge, Massachusetts at MIT. However, this year I am in the other Cambridge (the OC for short :) ) in the UK. Along with about 40 other MIT students, I am studying abroad at Cambridge University as part of the Cambridge-MIT Exchange. I was disappointed to see no coverage of study abroad at MIT in the blogs, so I asked if I could write about my experiences here as a guest author. First off, some perks of life at the other Cambridge: Unlike the American school year which runs from September to May with a summer break, the Cambridge school year consists of 3 terms of 8 weeks each. This translates as less time spent in class. And in between terms, we get 6 weeks off, which is pretty amazing for traveling. I was recently in Istanbul, somewhere I never thought Id end up, especially while all my friends at MIT were preparing for finals (sorry, I had to rub it in). Also, that whole stereotype of British people drinking tea all the time is kind of true. At 11 am everyday, my department breaks for tea. Everything in the building stops and everyone from the Fellows, to the department librarian, to us lowly undergrads congregate. Im thinking of starting a campaign to bring this to MIT, but I doubt it would catch on. The only thing Ive seen MIT professors and students alike stop for is the World Cup. And finally, Cambridge is strangely full of Harry Potter moments. We have (wizard) robes that we are required to wear pretty often to formal dinners and other things. And a lot of the dining halls look very Harry Potter Great Hall-esque. Ill try and dig up some pictures soon. On an unrelated note, I was quite disappointed to learn that JK Rowling did not come up with OWLs and NEWTs all on her own. They are actually based exactly on the British education system. Students take GCSEs (OWLs) when they are 16 and A-Levels (NEWTs) when they are 18 The things I miss most about the US after my family and friends are food items like pizza, bagels, and ice cream in winter. And I spent way too much time in American supermarkets while I was home in December. The Cambridge term officially began last Thursday (the 18th), and coverage of life abroad will continue soon!

Activities that managers perform in markets - Free Essay Example

Managers perform certain activities as they efficiently and effectively coordinate the work of others using different approach and skills. This report was prepared to identify and discuss the relevant Katzs skills which are or not reflected in the work of Mr. Gan, Director of GPA Holdings Berhad. Mr Gan is an executive Director of GPA holdings Berhad. Being an executive Director, he is mainly responsible for the formulation of the company policies, the strategies, the planning, the direction and the development of his organization. He is a member of the board of directors and he reports directly to the chairman.GPA Holdings Berhad is an investment holdings company and is listed in the main market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad.. The core business and operations of the groups are in the manufacture, distribution and marketing of automotive batteries. The interview identified managerial functions, the skills required at different managerial level, the management roles of the m anager and how technological advancement affects the managers job. Based on the results of the interview, it is evidently supported that conceptual skills of Katzs principle are reflected in Mr.Gans job as a top line manager. However, there are other roles that are found to be relevant to Mr.Gans job as well. Katz wrote that performance of a manager depends on his fundamental skills rather than on his individuality traits (Katz,1955). According to him, it is important to know what the managers do, not what the managers are. He then proposed a three category typology of skills: technical, human and conceptual. Technical skills involved understanding and ability in a certain specialized fields where a specific skill is needed (Katz, 1955). This type of knowledge is acquired by a combination of formal education, training, and job experience. According to Katz, technical skills meant working with things, not people (Katz, 1955).Technical skills are most important at the lower leve l of administration and as an administrator moves to higher levels, the need for technical competency decreases (Katz,1955). In relevance to Katzs theory, as a top line manager, Mr Gan uses limited technical skills in his job aspect. For eg, he provides technical support and presentations to his subordinates through charts. Also, he uses his limited technical skills to ensure that his organization and activities operate are legal and do not cause an adverse impact to workers or the environment. Hence, it can be seen that as a top line manager, Mr. Gan does not involve himself in hands-on operations and activities; instead he employs technical engineers, maintenance engineers and skill workers to run the operations and production. This strongly supports Katzs technical theory. Interpersonal skills are essential to communicate, to motivate and to create team spirit between the subordinates, superiors, peers, and outsiders (Yukl,2002). Such skills are either inborn or acquired throu gh training and exposure to work environment (Katz,1955). Mr Gans human skills were well honed as he is the Director of his company; he is constantly working directly with his colleagues, staffs and his board of directors. He emphasized that there is a need to be a team player in an organization in order to achieve the targeted organizational goals. In times of decision making, human skills are essentially needed (Katz,1955).This is essential because everything a leader says and does have an effect on his associates. This belief appears to reflect Mr. Gans role at the company. As a top level manager, he frequently holds top level meetings and brain storming sessions with his board of directors to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the organization. This shows that he uses his human skills to communicate and to work cooperatively among his colleagues to resolve conflicts. On the other hand, this shows that Mr. Gan has the attributes of a disseminator role as well. As a dissemin ator, he transmits information received from outsiders or from subordinates to members of the organization during the meetings held (Mintzberg, 1975).Barnard (1930) believed that it is the managers job to communicate and stimulate employees to achieve high levels of performance. Mr. Gan knows that it is important to provide employees with the right and adequate tools for the employee to work with. Therefore, he identifies weaknesses in the organization and often provides training and seminars as the necessary tools for their efficient performance. From this, it can be seen that human skills are needed in his job as a top line manager in order to disseminate information and to motivate his members. Conceptual skills are the ability to mould an idea into a concept so that it can be more easily presented to and understood by the targeted group (Yulk, 2002). According to Katz, conceptual skills become the most important ability of all at the top level of administration (Katz, 1955). This is strongly supported, as Mr. Gan is a top level administrator, he claims conceptual skills is significant in his job as he has to conceptualize so that his workers and people can readily relate to the problems at hand. Katz further proposed that these skills extend to visualizing the relationship of the firm to the external environment (Katz, 1955). Using his conceptual skills, Mr.Gan identifies how the company can be affected by external factors so that the damage can be mitigated. Once a problem is identified, he determines what needs to be done, how it will be done and who to do it. It is clearly visible that his role also involves organizing, one of Fayols management functions (Fayol, 1949). It is important to shine and be different in todays world said Mr. Gan. He said, in order to survive in this competitive world, one has to apply conceptual skills in creating new ideas and concepts. It can be deduced that conceptual skills is strongly needed in his job as a top line ma nager in order to simplify problem areas and implement simple and practical solutions to the problems identified. Katz acknowledged that these skills are interrelated when applied to managerial problems (Katz, 1955). He further claims that different degree of application of these skills are required at varying levels of management within the organization (Katz,1955). These roles are not easily separable. For example, without conceptual skills, Mr. Gan is unable to recognize problem areas and implement solutions to those problems. As a result, he cannot make effective decisions. It is clear that the successful migration from entry level to mid-level manager and from mid-level manager to top level manager is a direct correlation of the accumulation of the required experiences and skills as one moves up the corporate ladder (Guglielmino Carroll,n.d) In todays world, with rapid technological changes and increasing competition, acquiring new technology becomes crucial to enable fi rms to develop new products more quickly. The usage of technology is worldwide. Technology definitely increase productivity, machine efficiency, creates economies of scales. This will lead to lower cost of production; hence improve competitiveness for the companys product in the market. If one do not or unable to adapt to technological advancement, one will lose out to the competitors eventually. Most organizations indicate that the major reasons for employing technological changes in their organization are to reduce labor costs, improve efficiency and productivity of the company and eventually generate a greater profitability for the company (The Hunter Group, 2001). With the aid of technology, organizations are able to achieve economies of scales through mass production, improve productivity, increase speed in terms of processes, and reduces human errors. With technological advancement, human efforts are being replaced with machine efforts. The introduction of flexible machine tools and programmable equipments are capable in performing variety of tasks. When asked how technology changes affected his organization, Mr Gan mentioned that his company reduced their number of workforce to be replaced with machineries. He also added that this change was able to reduce their overhead expenses and that their organizations efficiency and productivity increases as well causing an increase in their companys profitability. Besides increasing efficiency and productivity, technology advancement reduces time consumption in performing tasks. As automated machines are faster in recording, filing, and processing information, this reduces time consumption taken through manual recording. As everything is computerized, inputing data and retrieving information can be done within seconds and with no human errors involved as the functions are preprogrammed. Before the advent of technology, Mr, Gan used to prepare his work for discussion on pieces of paper and he armed himself also with a calculator. He finds it so cumbersome and time consuming if there are changes to be made in his reports or figures presentations. Thus, it is a welcome change that he is able to use software to edit any of his reports now with technological changes because any amendments or corrections just need to be made thru a click of a mouse. In addition to that, technology allows processes to be integrated such as to do video conferencing especially when the personnel involved for discussion in the meeting is overseas. Previously, before technology advancement, Mr Gan had to make frequent overseas trips to market his products thus incurring additional overheads and time. Now, his company is able to market their products worldwide through electronic business in order to achieve its goals efficiently and effectively. It can be seen that technological advancement has certainly improves Mr.Gans organization production, efficiency, cost effectiveness and also Mr Gans job as a mana ger in his company. Even though, new technologies are not beneficial to the employees or the environment to which they are newly introduced and that new processes and equipment may bring about unemployment or the rejection of skilled workers, however, this does not concern the organization as their goals are achieved effectively and efficiently. In conclusion, based on the interview with Mr. Gan, it is clearly evident that there is significant skills of Katzs three skills present in Mr Gans job as a top line manager. As a top line manager, he uses limited technical skills in his job as he does not limit himself in performing specialized tasks. Also, as a manager, Mr Gan applies human skills when he disseminates information to his members and when he motivates them. However, among the three skills, conceptual skills is strongly needed in his job as a top line manager in order to simplify problem areas and implement simple and practical solutions to the problems identified. Besides Katzs skills, there are other skills needed by the managers in order to perform his duties at an optimum level. Such as Fayols 14 principle of management and Mintzbergs managerial roles. The influence of technology has a direct impact on Mr Gans managerial work in his company. As technology advances, Mr Gans work becomes more productive, effective and efficient.

Analysis Of Lysistrata And Homers The Iliad - 1120 Words

The ancient Greek culture is rich in many elements and is hence reinforced through the diversity and authenticity of the ancient Greek tales. It is through the ancient Greek tales, that the true depiction and discernment of the ancient Greek society comes to life. Aristophaness Lysistrata and Homer’s The Iliad are examples of the ancient Greek tales that tell stories of the social, religious, cultural and moral theories that reflect the ancient Greek society. Through the societal aspects, like war, love, courage and the role of women, the ancient Greek story and definition of life gradually comes to life and reconciles the actions of the ancient characters. Although from the outside the women are oppressed and ignored, they are attached to the central argument and theme in Lysistrata. The war in Lysistrata is getting out of hand and hence, the women discover that they have the power to bring the war to an end. In the beginning of the Play, Lysistrata speaks to Kleonike a fellow woman and explains that it is only the women that could end the Athens versus Spartans war. Even Kleonike who is a woman seems to be in doubt and explains to Lysistrata that the only role that the women have is to dress up and look gleeful for their husbands. In discontent, Lysistrata tells Kleonike that, â€Å"Im positively ashamed to be a woman an indication that being a woman in the ancient Greek culture entailed a lot of stereotypes (Aristophanes Ewans, 52). Just like in Lysistrata, in the Iliad the women from the central reason for the aggravation of the war between the Achaeans and the Trojans. The capture of Chryseis and Briseis from the central argument of the Iliad. The two women were the reason that a plague struck the Achaean army and killed many soldiers necessitating Agamemnon the Achaean King to return Chryseis but took Briseis who was Achilles’s. Is Spontaneous Generation Real

For several centuries it was believed that living organisms could spontaneously come from nonliving matter. This idea, known as spontaneous generation, is now known to be false. Proponents of at least some aspects of spontaneous generation included well-respected philosophers and scientists such as Aristotle, Rene Descartes, William Harvey, and Isaac Newton. Spontaneous generation was a popular notion due to the fact that it seemed to be consistent with observations that a number of animal organisms would apparently arise from nonliving sources. Spontaneous generation was disproved through the performance of several significant scientific experiments. Key Takeaways Spontaneous generation is the idea that living organisms can spontaneously come from nonliving matter.Over the years great minds like Aristotle and Isaac Newton were proponents of some aspects of spontaneous generation which have all been shown to be false.Francesco Redi did an experiment with meat and maggots and concluded that maggots do not arise spontaneously from rotting meat. The Needham and the Spallanzani experiments were additional experiments that were conducted to help disprove spontaneous generation. The Pasteur experiment was the most famous experiment conducted that disproved spontaneous generation that was accepted by the majority of the scientific community. Pasteur demonstrated that bacteria appearing in broth are not the result of spontaneous generation. Do Animals Spontaneously Generate? Prior to the mid-19th century, it was commonly believed that the origin of certain animals was from nonliving sources. Lice were thought to come from dirt or sweat. Worms, salamanders, and frogs were thought to be birthed from the mud. Maggots were derived from rotting meat, aphids and beetles supposedly sprang from wheat, and mice were generated from soiled clothing mixed with wheat grains. While these theories seem quite ludicrous, at the time they were thought to be reasonable explanations for how certain bugs and other animals seemed to appear from no other living matter. Spontaneous Generation Debate While a popular theory throughout history, spontaneous generation was not without its critics. Several scientists set out to refute this theory through scientific experimentation. At the same time, other scientists tried to find evidence in support of spontaneous generation. This debate would last for centuries. Redi Experiment In 1668, the Italian scientist and physician Francesco Redi set out to disprove the hypothesis that maggots were spontaneously generated from rotting meat. He contended that the maggots were the result of flies laying eggs on exposed meat. In his experiment, Redi placed meat in several jars. Some jars were left uncovered, some were covered with gauze, and some were sealed with a lid. Over time, the meat in the uncovered jars and the jars covered with gauze became infested with maggots. However, the meat in the sealed jars did not have maggots. Since only the meat that was accessible to flies had maggots, Redi concluded that maggots do not spontaneously arise from meat. Needham Experiment In 1745, English biologist and priest John Needham set out to demonstrate that microbes, such as bacteria, were the result of spontaneous generation. Thanks to the invention of the microscope in the 1600s and increased improvements to its usage, scientists were able to view microscopic organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and protists. In his experiment, Needham heated chicken broth in a flask in order to kill any living organisms within the broth. He allowed the broth to cool and placed it in a sealed flask. Needham also placed unheated broth in another container. Over time, both the heated broth and unheated broth contained microbes. Needham was convinced that his experiment had proven spontaneous generation in microbes. Spallanzani Experiment In 1765, Italian biologist and priest Lazzaro Spallanzani, set out to demonstrate that microbes do not spontaneously generate. He contended that microbes are capable of moving through the air. Spallanzani believed that microbes appeared in Needhams experiment because the broth had been exposed to air after boiling but before the flask had been sealed. Spallanzani devised an experiment where he placed the broth in a flask, sealed the flask, and removed the air from the flask before boiling. The results of his experiment showed that no microbes appeared in the broth as long as it remained in its sealed condition. While it appeared that the results of this experiment had dealt a devastating blow to the idea of spontaneous generation in microbes, Needham argued that it was the removal of air from the flask that made spontaneous generation impossible. Pasteur Experiment In 1861, Louis Pasteur presented evidence that would virtually put an end to the debate. He designed an experiment similar to Spallanzanis, however, Pasteurs experiment implemented a way to filter out microorganisms. Pasteur used a flask with a long, curved tube called a swan-necked flask. This flask allowed air to have access to the heated broth while trapping dust containing bacterial spores in the curved neck of the tube. The results of this experiment were that no microbes grew in the broth. When Pasteur tilted the flask on its side allowing the broth access to the curved neck of the tube and then set the flask upright again, the broth became contaminated and bacteria reproduced in the broth. Bacteria also appeared in the broth if the flask was broken near the neck allowing the broth to be exposed to non-filtered air. This experiment demonstrated that bacteria appearing in broth are not the result of spontaneous generation. The majority of the scientific community conside red this conclusive evidence against spontaneous generation and proof that living organisms only arise from living organisms. 1. The Companies: PharmaCARE was a successful and profitable pharmaceutical company. After launching the â€Å"We CARE about YOUR World ®Ã¢â‚¬ initiative, PharmaCARE was able to defeat PAC’s lobbying efforts. Later, PharmaCARE found out their best selling diabetes drug was slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Subsequently, they established the subsidiary, CompCARE to get the FDA off their backs. Later they found out that in one of their labs there was mold growing in the vents. CompCARE was later sold to WellCo right after the scandal. 2. The Governments: The FDA ensures all of the drugs that are being sold in the U. S. are safe for the patients and now that some people died from the AD23 drug, they will most likely be involved. In order to avoid the FDA restrictions, PharmaCARE opened a subsidiary and went to Colberia. They did this because they want to maximize their profits, which will be hard to achieve with FDA scrutiny. We will write a custom essay sample on Employment at Will or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Administration) is another stakeholder. They may get involved due to the mold and sickness issues that employees have been complaining about. EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) ensures equal employment opportunity for all and advocates for folks who get discriminated because of their gender, race and religion. They may also get involved because of Ayesha’s complaint about her promotion. The Colberian Government is another one of the stakeholders because they allowed PharmaCARE to open operations in their country. 3. The Employees: The employees working for PharmaCARE and the indigenous population of Colberia who is working for CompCARE are also stakeholders in this scenario. Donna was one of the best employees; she always showed up to work and did her work. One day, Allen was told there was mold around the air vents. When the problem wasn’t taken care of Donna became really ill and began missing many days of work. Tom, one of the supervisors, warned Allen about the air quality inside the lab, after Allen made no move to fix the problem, he threatened to tell OSHA. Allen is considered one of the stakeholders because he was the one who ran the operation â€Å"Clean Room. † He had the choice of whistleblowing on the wrong doing or keeping quiet and taking the bonus. Analyzing the Ethics PharmaCARE’s actions towards Colberia’s indigenous population and rank-and-file were very selfish and self-centered. PharmaCARE’s executives were rewarded with luxurious homes that have tennis courts, swimming pools, parks, etc. While on the other hand, the workers in Colberia that were doing the tough work were rewarded only with $1. 00 a day payment for their work. There’s a big difference between the workers in Colberia and the PharmaCARE executives. The Colberia workers are being paid way below U. S. minimum wage and way below what they should be paid. According to Anderson (2004), ethics are explained as the principles and values that define acceptable conduct for business intuitions. He also explains that social responsibility is the obligations of a business organization that maximizes positive impact in its business operation and minimizes its negative impact on society. Acceptability of corporate behavior will be determine by workers, customers, competitors, government and regulatory agencies, special interest groups, and the community. The actions that PharmaCARE took towards Colberia’s indigenous population were one of many examples that reflects an unethical and irresponsible corporate culture. PharmaCARE should have paid the Colberian workers with a fair amount of money for their hard work. PharmaCARE should not have taken advantage of the Colberian environment. Instead of taking advantage of Colberia, they should have focused on minimizing their negative effects on the global society by actually promoting their â€Å"We CARE about YOUR world† concept. If PharmaCARE really cared about â€Å"OUR world† then they would apply the United States requirements to the employees in Colberia. Even though there aren’t any requirements in Colberia for the employees’ pay, PharmaCARE should be good citizens who care about â€Å"OUR world† and not take advantage of the people and the villages in Colberia. They should have also reacted differently to the employee safety issues while applying high standards to their drug manufacturing operations (at least meet the FDA’s minimum requirements). PharmaCARE decided to establish its subsidiary in Colberia to make the most profit while avoiding all the regulations and rules. This careless attitude towards providing a safe environment for its lab workers and its attempt to evade regulatory requirement such as the FDA and OSHA confirms its unethical and immoral approach toward making a profit. From the Colberia operations, to the lab employees’ safety, to the ridiculous profits and the heart attacks that many AD23 recipients suffered, PharmaCARE exhibited a trend of behaviors that contradicts its public claim of caring about people. In fact, it shows behavior that is in line with navigating the legal restrictions while doing as little as possible for everyone else at the account of making as much profit as possible for PharmaCARE and its shareholders and executives. Who should be fired? Allen cannot legally fire Donna, Tom, or Ayesha due to the exceptions of the employment at will doctrine. The employment at will doctrine states employees without a written employment contract can be fired for no cause at all, bad cause, or no cause at all. However, all employees named above have protections under one of its exceptions: †¢Donna: Under the public policy exception, employees cannot be fired for filing a claim after being injured on the job. This shows that Allen cannot legally fire Donna. To decrease risk for his company, Allen should clear the mold from the air vents. The most logical reason for Donna to get ill is by the mold on the vents. Especially since Donna had a perfect attendance record. Donna did the right thing by filling for workers’ compensation because of the chronic bronchial. †¢Tom: In Tom’s case, he threatened to complain to OSHA. Allen cannot legally fire Tom because of the covenant of good faith exception, which protects against trying to act as a good supervisor in good faith. Tom was merely trying to protect his coworkers from becoming ill just like Donna did. Tom also has protection under the public policy exception because the OSHA rules state their environment has to be safe. It is very unsafe for the employees to go to work everyday with the bad air quality. Allen should not fire him for trying to obey the law and keep the workplace safe for his employees. To help minimize risks, Allen should get someone to inspect the lab and make sure everything in the air is good. †¢Ayesha: In Ayesha’s case, Allen cannot legally fire her under the implied contract exception. There was an implied contract between Ayesha and Allen that Ayesha was going to promoted to supervisor, she was a good worker and she really believed that she was going to be promoted to supervisor. This probably happened as a result of some interaction(s) between her and management, whether through verbal promise or otherwise where she was led to believe that she should be promoted. To minimize risk, Allen should promote with a condition that she must perform in order to stay at the position. This will ease Allen’s concerns about her abilities and skills to get the job done. Also as a result, Ayesha will also stop thinking that it is her religion that is stopping her from being promoted. Will Whistleblower Policy help PharmaCARE The whistleblower policy is used to help protect employees from getting fired for reporting wrongdoing. Companies with strong ethical corporate cultures should have a robust whistleblower policy in place that is coupled with a clear, well-understood, and well-communicated code of ethics. It should be noted the presence of a whistleblower policy alone is not enough as many such policies are merely ink on paper and reality of the corporate culture can be create a hostile environment for those who dare raise their voice. In some cases, for example, employees fear to blow the whistle because they know that they will consequently face discrimination from their coworkers. In the case of PharmaCARE, a whistleblower policy would benefit Allen because he would no longer be left with the tough decision of whether or not he should listen to his boss and fire all of them and keep his mouth shut or to do the right thing and tell authority about this issue. If Allen does the right thing, he could address the employees’ safety issue from the mold in the air vents. This goes without mentioning the possible health effects and risks the mold could have on the drugs being made in those labs. Allen will benefit from the whistleblower policy because he’ll be protected from losing his job. If Allen decides to be a whistleblower on his boss, he might receive hate from his boss if he gets punished for telling Allen to keep quiet about the bogus prescriptions. Moreover, Allen should blow the whistle on his boss before someone blows the whistle on him. Someone could easily blow the whistle on Allen because he is the one who found out about the mold in the air vents and did not fix the problem. He was also ordered encouraged doctors to write down the names of bogus patient names, which is literally fraud and is illegal. PharmaCARE’s Environmental Stewardship PharmaCare’s managers embraced a corporate culture in which unethical behavior and made immoral business decisions were just a means to end. In order to avoid the high FDA standards and cut some corners, they established the subsidiary CompCARE with operations outside the U. S. where the FDA rules do not apply. They were also cutting corners with safety issues in the workplace. Many of the employees working in the lab, started becoming very ill due to the fact that there was mold inside the air vents. After being warned about the mold in the air vents, management decided to ignore the issue and pretend like there is nothing wrong. Next, they were encouraging doctors to commit fraud. Finally, after they began selling AD23 to hospitals, clinics, and physician offices, many patients died from heart attacks, which tied to that corporate culture that failed to do proper testing and/or careless about reporting those results as possible side effects. The managers were probably well aware of the possibilities and decided to take the risk anyway with plans to sell at the right time. And this is precisely what happened. Legally, it would have to be proven that executives knowingly did that before anyone is held accountable. Although they may not be illegal, was it really the right thing? An example of something similar to what PharmaCARE has done was the Enron scandal where unethical behavior was wide spread, namely the company’s finances. Aiding in cooking the books were independent organizations that were later fined but no one was criminally indicted. According to Clarkson et al, The Enron debacle was the largest bankruptcy in the history of U. S. business. It will always remain as a symbol of unethical behavior to management. Enron was made up of two pipeline companies that work emerge into a large Energy trading company. The company realizing it’s immense growth, they entered the online energy trading market. Most of Enron’s employees owned a large part of company stock. As time passed by, competition increased and Enron began diversifying water and establishing power plants in Brazil and India. Enron’s employees began to get greedy, and runs managers would receive bonuses on whether or not they met their goals. This caused then to inflate future earnings on energy contracts. After going bankrupt, many of Enron’s shareholders lost a lot of value money in the stock they owned. Purpose of CERCLA Act The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) was enacted in December of 1980 by U. S. congress. The CERLCA was established to prevent the distribution of hazardous waste at abandoned sites. The CERCLA gives power to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to inspect and cleanup abandoned waste sites. In 1986, the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) amended it. The clean up provisions are the most powerful part of CERCLA whereby they describe the process of clean and more importantly hold responsible parties for its cost. These provisions also cover the substances and their hazardous designations, to include: †¢ The Clean Air Act (CAA) †¢The Clean Water Act (CWA) †¢The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) †¢The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) In the case of PharmaCARE, the CERCLA provision that would most apply is the TSCA where its employees would be protected against environmental pollutants and toxic substances that may seriously impact their health. PharmaCARE’s liability would apply for air pollution and toxic substance submission under the CAA and the TSA respectively. References

Bias of Roots and Culture free essay sample

Discussing roots and culture is often a very subjective topic. Quite often, the same story is interpreted entirely differently, depending on who is telling the story. This principle is also true in fictional works. A narrator will bring his/her own perspective and biases into the events that he or she is telling about. In Raymond Carver’s Cathedral, the first-person narrator has several biases that are used to reveal character. This first-person narrator has both positive and negative biases, and insights that clearly represent his character. The narrator in Cathedral has biases that serve to create his character well. Some of these are positive, and some are negative. The first clear bias that is made clear is a positive one. In the introduction of the story, as the narrator is giving background information on his wife, he speaks of her first husband. The manner in which he speaks of her impresses upon the reader of how little this first marriage matters to him, and thus shows that he acknowledges his wife has a past, and that he loves her just the same. We will write a custom essay sample on Bias of Roots and Culture or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Carver shows the narrators’ indifference to this first husband when â€Å"why should he have a name? † (Responding to Literature, 439) is asked. Another one of the biases the narrator has does not serve to create such a positive picture of him. This negative bias is the narrators’ bias against the blind in the beginning of the story. He speaks of them as very somber, as his idea of blind people was that all the â€Å"blind moved slowly and never laughed. † (438) These insights into the mind of the first-person narrator help to establish him as a character. The use of first-person narration in Raymond Carvers Cathedral serves to establish the narrator as a legitimate character well. The reader is given direct insight into the thoughts of the narrator, which would not be possible from other perspectives. For example, the reader is given a direct path into the narrators’ thoughts of the blind mans’ wife, Beulah. Without the words actually being spoken, the reader knows that the narrator feels sorry for her, without having ever met the blind man. He believes that Beulah must have had a â€Å"pitiful life† since she could â€Å"never see herself as he was seen in the eyes of her loved one†(440). Wordless insights into thoughts, such as this, are the true point of having a first-person narrator; because not only is the reader given a picture of the narrators’ thoughts, it serves to create a more dynamic, lifelike character, and not merely a lifeless voice that is tediously moving through words. First-person narration is always all about perspective, and consequently, bias. All first-person narration in fiction is chosen specifically for the purpose of having that bias, and those individual ideas that make for an interesting telling of a story. Raymond Carver’s Cathedral uses the first person narration very well, for that exact purpose. This story’s biases and partialities are used to separate the reader, and only see the narrators’ version of what happened. Had the story been told from the perspective of the blind man, it would have been immensely different. Biases come from ones’ culture and environment. Ideally, stories and retellings of events would be completely honest; but prejudices and tensions gradually become the general theme of the story, to the point that roots, culture, and acceptance thereof become irrelevant, and nothing remains but intolerance.

Born and raised in Marcy projects I grew up of loving the game of basketball and baseball. Very similar to the television show Everybody Hates Chris My parents was extremely strict, my father provided for the family by working two jobs, while my mother stayed home and took care of me, my two brother and one sister. My neighborhood was rough and dangerous, so hanging out in the street was not an option; I had to use recreation center and after school program as tools to keep get me off the streets. I could actually say I was a proficient athletic as young boy. Many trophies for baseball and basketball sit in my mother living room. I was even offered a part-time scholarship to Bishop Loughlin catholic high school for basketball but was turned down because of my parent's inability to pay for the other half of the school fees. As I grew older my love for sports started to diminish. I started to put more interest in girls, money and less into school and sports. During my early childhood years I was on the worst end of a couple accidents as my broke my arm two times. My first broken arm occurred when I was ten; it was during a game steal the bacon when I was pushed into the gate by a member of the opposite team making me go flying into the gate causing me to break my arm. The second time happened during my tenth grade high school year. I really can't explain how it happen only thing. It was a complete blur; all I could remember was being in gym class and slipping on the blue mattresses that are used for gymnastic. I said damn not again, I screamed and looked down to towards my arm to see it was bent like a wired hanger, get off me I shouted. I got this cause all you going to do is place more pain on my arm. My second time breaking my arm required surgery; having two metal pins placed inside of my right ar m. While attending William E. Grady high school I wasn't the biggest fan of school. Getting me to attend school was like making a prostitute to attend a church sermon. I would cut school occasionally to just hang on the block or to talk to girls. Waking up 6:45am to travel an hour and half for school was dreadful. Imagine being on the train with bums, alcoholics and watching the sunrise, as young boy these new scenery was disturbing, so I avoided these picture by not ditching school. It was difficult for me to attend a new in high school your childhood friend wasn't attending. My perspective towards school changed during my eleventh grade year. I had failed five of seven classes and I wasn't going to graduate. My guidance counselor Ms. Mendez was really considering transferring me to an alternative school. She anxious to speak to someone from my family to tell my situation with school and the path I was heading down. It wasn't to that very meeting between my aunt and Ms. Mendez that I realize I needed to change my lifestyle. It took everything in my aunt power not to place a hand across my face in the Ms. Mendez office, but instead she gave me a lecture. After seeing the tears shed from my aunts very made me realize that I didn't want to be seen as other dude in the street and living in my neighborhood it was possible to happen. Therefore I looked as school as my getaway making sure to graduate from high school. I went on to graduate from high school in august of 2004. So are we going back to your apartment? Within these factors, there are a lot of factors that we need to address to maximize our exercise adherence. Situation factors which affect exercise adherence and motivation are time, money, energy, role conflict, social support, exercising with others, facilities, climate and physical discomfort. Personal factors affecting exercise and motivation are awareness of personality, goal setting, imagery and arousal regulation and concentration. These are vital factors to maximize our exercise adherence. Time management is an important part of everyones life. We have to find time in our life to exercise. According to the American College of Sports Medicine(ACSM) guidelines, time to exercise should be between 20-60 minutes, depending on how the individual carried out exercise whether it more than 3-5 times a week or less than 3-5 times a week. It must be situated in a time slot where you will find that exercise will bring enjoyment not the opposite way. Some suggested that its better to do a workout after having a day working hard which can reduced work stress. Money is not a good reason why not to exercise. Exercise doesnt mean we have to workout in a gym or doing it in expensive facilities such as treadmill and so on. We can do simple exercise for examples walking, running and jogging in our own neighbourhood or recreational parks nearby. Our daily life is all about exercise such as walking to our workplace and many more. We often hear individual excuses of not exercising are they are too tired or lack of energy to do it. Nutrition plays important part in exercise. With a good consumption of food will increase energy in your body. It also can affect psychologically and physiologically when working out while you are hungry which distract your focus. It is important that prevent from having a meal before your exercise session. Role conflict refers to time management. It can be related to any commitments such as work commitments, family commitments or any other commitments. As long as its not in conflict with it. The main thing is to identify our priorities lie and to make any sacrifice if possible. A good social support is vital for good exercise adherence. To stay in it, you must have the supports of your family and friends. They must understand your commitment to it and will try their best to do something in your interest such as organizing an event which will not contradict with your exercise date. Distraction from them is the least you want. Some will prefer that exercising with other will improves the atmosphere for example having fun and create positive energy with them, rather than doing it alone which tedium can sets in. Exercising in a group exercise class is the best solution for gaining high motivation. when you missed a class, you will have to explain to them why and this will cause fear of embarrassment into you and you will try to avoid it. The climate in which we exercise is very influential in term of exercise adherence . if the climate is not as we desire whether its too hot, too cold, dry or wet, it can cause an affect in your exercising. Try to do it in a climate that suits you or if the climate is not as you desire, try to have a backup plan such doing it in a sport centre. We must also know what it takes to exercise which can create physical discomfort and the real meaning of discomfort To help in your exercise, it helps to reflect on yourself to improve self-confidence for the exercise program such as prior successes, role models, verbal persuasion and emotional arousal. You must remind yourself with your prior successes that is there any challenges that you cant cope with. Then reflect to other people who have try to do it and have done it. Support is important as I stated earlier and control over emotions for seeing a success as the end result. With goal settings, it enhances your motivation why you are doing it in the first place. To be effective, your goals should be a SMARTER goals which is specific, measurable, accountable, exciting, recorded, time and realistic. For example if you do it to lose weight, you have to state how much you want to lose weight and by when you want to lose it. To improve exercise adherence, its good to use your imagination. Imagery or visualization can help you seeing the outcomes if you continue exercising. With arousal regulation and concentration as well as imagination, you can prevent an individual feeling bored while doing exercise. Try to change the settings of your exercise and be creative about it. As I stated above about the factors on encouraging exercise adherence, different groups have different factors to another. For example young children do exercise because they are told to do so and most of them find it interesting, in adolescent, in their mind is that breaking a sweat or do exercise is uncool in the view of social trends. Again for old people, they will say they exercise to prevent or reduce the risk of having a chronic disease such as heart disease. Another example would be male and female. As exercise refers to weight management, female tends to exercise for that reason. In the case for male, they do exercise to be fit and for the body image. An exercise prescription for psychological well being for a particular group Young adult are most associated with depression or anxiety, exercise can alleviate their symptoms. Exercise programme must be done step by step to prevent any unwanted factor to present such as injury. In this programme, they are 5 key of creating it which is skill, social, fitness, competition and enjoyment. Skill is to gain feelings of accomplishment, social isto gain a sense of belonging or feeling affliated to an organization or group, fitness is to improve strength, shape or stamina, competition is to archieve success either through competition or seeing progress and enjoyment is simply to have fun or pleasure. It also required a community based intervention, school based intervention and parental interventions to encourage young people to maintain an active lifestyle. In community based interventions, the involvement of young adults in community service can create self-esteem with meeting new people. Doing exercises by the implementation of its community is vital such as walking and cycling in the local parks, encourage walking to school and so on. With male are more involved than women, the community should organize non-competitive activities that appeal this group such as charity fund and etc. In school based intervention, its logical to implement more greater physical activity. The teacher is vital as a role model for this particular group which can motivate them to participate in school activities Parental intervention are the most important as they are related to each other and they know their children better than anyone. They act as positive role modelto their children, personally demonstrating the benefits of an active lifestyle over more sedentary pursuits. They also can encourage their children to participate and they themselves to participate with their children. Parents needs to offer supports and encouragement to their children whatever their doing in exercise. Research has shown that female need more supports and encouragements than their male peers. Practical examples of how best to prescribe and promote adherence in different groups For sedentary old people, weekly exercise activities would be organize for them so that they would feel fresh. Besides that, they need to know the importance of exercise in health term such as reducing acute and chronic diseases. Family support for them is best as they dont want to do alone, but besides with family. For a group of people with anger issues, they need to do exercise just like the rest the people that is 3-5times a week for 20-60 minutes such as jogging and walking. in addition, share their views about their anger issues and reflect themselves what creates the issues at the first place. For a group of young children, regular exercise would help. Parental encouragement and support is important. As their mind are just to have fun, organize a fun activities whichcan motivate to do exercise more often. Education to them about the benefits of exercise will give them the thought to exercise more often on their own and with family Referrence Exercise psychology By J Buckworth, R Dishman http://www.ic.nhs.uk/webfiles/publications/mental%20health/other%20mental%20health%20publications/Adult%20psychiatric%20morbidity%2007/APMS%2007%20(FINAL)%20Standard.pdf http://appliedsportpsych.org/Resource-Center/health-and-fitness/articles/psych-benefits-of-exercise http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwfit/adherence.html http://www.psych.qub.ac.uk/Staff/Profiles/Trew/A5AdolsExChap.pdf
